Joan Carles Doval, founder of Picap receives the “Creu de Sant Jordi”

This year 2022, the "Creu de Sant Jordi" has been awarded to Joan Carles Doval (Sabadell, 1953), who has bet for years, exclusively, on quality music. He began in the musical world organizing concerts and as a cultural agitator in the 70s, at the same time that he entered thejournalistic and radio world, in 1977 he undertook a new path in the recording world with the help of Ramon Ferran and his label Bass Drums. Later, he joined EDIGSA as head of promotion and also directing the national artistic department. At the end of 1983, when EDIGSA closed, he joined PDI (Produccions Discogràfiques Independents) and in April 1984 he presented his personal project: the new record company Picap.

Ten years later, in 1994, Doval founded a new company dedicated to the commercial distribution of audiovisual media, Actual Records Distribució, S.L. Picap is one of the independent companieswith a larger catalogue, especially in Catalan music in all musical genres. It is a label that supports Catalan performers and authors, respecting their linguistic expression, but also preferably betting on the Catalan language. Some examples of artists who have been part of the label and who are currently doing so are Maria del Mar Bonet, Raimon, Lluís Llach, Tomeu Penya, SAU, Sangtraït, 31 FAM, Flashy Ice Cream, P.A.W.N. Gang, Tramma, Júlia Blum and Sexenni, among others. And even, over time, a line of high-quality Latin music was opened.

Picap has been producing music for more than 38 years, but it has also acquired the prestigious and historical catalogs of Als 4 Vents, EDIGSA and PDI, with which it obtains the largest catalog of recorded music in Catalonia in the last sixty years.

The Government of Catalonia has decided to award the "Creu de Sant Jordi 2022" to Joan Carles Doval, founder and president of Picap for his long professional career as a producer of recorded music, for the defense and impulse he has given to language, culture and music produced in the Catalan Speaking Countries and in the Catalan language.
